Genre conventions

To make an effective product that the audience would want I need to keep it within the conventions of that genre. The genre that I chose was horror therefore I had to keep within the common conventions of this.
For example one of the common conventions of horror that I found it that of dark colour scheme, this is for all mise en scene ranging from clothes to weather; generally also the movie posters are black/grey as well.  Another common convention of is the lighting and tone of the film, It is very rarely ever natural light nearly always very harsh bright light or foggy dim grey/green/blue toned light and this is because it adds to the feeling of terror designed to run through the film. Having the victim in the film is a common convention for a horror genre, often with a male who saved her i.e the hero.  Having an isolated location in an horror film is a common convention e.g the Blair witch project is set deep in the woods away from anybody, or saw is in a room in an unknown location.

The Blair witch project ^^^ clothes are dark colour as well as the tone of the film which is dark brow/grey

Saw 2 ^^^ characters are all dressed in dull/dark colour as well as the room being a dark colour with a green/blue tone to it.

Shot List

Because I want my film trailer to follow the conventions of a horror, I must use the shots and angles identified with horror to be considered inside this genre.

These are the camera techniques I will be using in my trailer :

  • Extreme closeup - Typical in horror for reactions or looking at objects
  • Extreme long shot - Used to show the setting of the film
  • Medium shot - Most used shot
  • Long shot - To show characters walking/movement
  • POV - shown as from characters eyes/view
Camera angles

  • Low angle - Used to show who is dominant in the scene.
  • High angle - Shows less signification/dominance and less power
  • eye level - neutral shot. balance in the scene / equilibrium.
  • canted angle - shows instability, very common horror shot.

Camera movement

  • Hand held shots - this is the most common type of shot for horror as it infuses the idea of fear into the view because of how real it makes it seem.

Treatment

Its the summer of 2012. A group of friends ( Grace, Jasmine, Claire, Charlotte) have just finished 6th form together, are all going to different universities at the end of the month. Because they won't get to spend as much time together when they go off to their different universities they decide they should go to the woods to have a party, this way they won't get disturbed or interrupted. They get out a map and plan where they want to go, based on how far away it is from any busy roads or towns/village.

Because they want the trip to be a bonding experience, they decide they only need the bare minimal to take such as clothes, sleeping bags, food, water etc. and leave everything else at home, including their phones so they won't be distracted. They put of their stuff into their car and drive to the woods, where they park. They then walk for a long time to find a good place to set up camp, in a area deep in the woods.

They all start to relax and start drinking and just talk until they start to get bored and decide to play 'hide and seek' they all each head seperate ways to hide from each other except for the seeker, who is grace.

They realise its been a long time and none of them have been found therefore they start to panic and try and look for each other. Their panic is increased when they see droplets of blood on trees/branches etc and all believe one of their friends must be injuredn shortly after this they all find each other and head back to camp. They are all then talking about what happened while they were seperated when they start to question where the blood came from as none of them are injured, but they disregard it as animals hunting. Jasmine is scared while the others are sleeping so she decides to stay up and keep watch. Just in case. In the morning when the girls wake up they notice that jasmine isnt there but think she must have gone to the toilet. Half an hour passes and the girls decide to split up and look for her. They look for hours untill it gets dark which when charlotte finds a body, which is jasmines.

Charlotte freaks out and tries to run back to the car to get away. As this is happening we see grace being killed but we don't see who the killer is. We then see Claire looking injured and bloody running/limping through the woods. We then see charlotte nearing the car, she starts smiling and laughing with relief
she stops as she hears the crack of a branch behind her, she is then hit with a blunt object over the head to which causes her to fall to the ground, blood dripping down her head. We then find out that the killer is claire by the camera swiverling to show her indenity. She laughs at the girl on the floor, drops her weapon and walks to get in and leave. While this is happening we see charlotte, who is not dead as we thought getting up. We see her behind claire about to strike as claire turns around ; she hits her on the head with the same object she was attacked with. Claire falls to the ground with a glazed look in her eyes.

Synopsis

A group of friends that are soon leaving to go to different universities around the country are going to the woods in Cornwall to spend their last days together. they all pile into one car with the bare minimal and set off to the deserted wood to have a party without being caught. They find the perfect place from anybody and any busy roads where they can do whatever they like and set up camp for the weekend.

They notice that there doesn't seem to be a lot of wildlife around, but disregard this and continue having a good time. Everybody is drunk and then decided to play the game 'hide and seek' but after an hour of hiding, they realise they cannot find each other. As they search for one another increasingly louder noises come from across the woods and they see drops of blood on trees. They then find each other, but are extremely confused as nobody is injured so wonder where the blood would be coming from. They all want to leave, but it is dark and they cannot find their car so decide to wait till morning to leave.

The people who don't think anything of what has happened go to sleep while the others stay up on lookout. When the people who've slept wake up they see that the other people have disappeared. They then quickly start to believe that there is a killer in the woods, maybe even one of them. They split up to try and locate their friends, but it gets dark and they still haven't found anybody. Then, one person searching finds a dead body laid next to a tree, they check to see who it is and it is one of their friends.

They then start to be killed off one by one until only the killer is left, who is one of the group. Satisfied, they turn to leave and drive off, but one of the victims who they thought was dead kills them.
